A Santa Fe Trail Weekend from La Junta
La Junta sits at the crossroads of the old Santa Fe Trail and the Arkansas River, which makes it an easy base for a weekend of frontier history. Here’s how we’d spend two days.
Day one — the trading post
Start eight miles east at Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, a full-size reconstruction of the 1830s adobe trading post that anchored the mountain branch of the Trail. Living-history interpreters, wagon ruts, and the smell of a working blacksmith shop make it feel less like a museum and more like a stop on the road west. Give it a half day.
Day one afternoon — art and kiva
Back in town, the Koshare Museum & Trading Post is half a mile from the inn and holds one of the country’s most significant collections of Southwestern and Native American art, built around a striking ceremonial kiva.
Day two — local history
The Otero Museum Association tells the story of La Junta itself — railroad town, ranching country, and Trail crossroads. It’s a smaller, volunteer-run gem that rewards an unhurried morning.
